Siraj-ud-Din Aurangabadi wrote in the generation after Wali, when the Deccan was still Urdu poetry's center of gravity. After a youth of mystical absorption so complete he is said to have wandered years in silence, he produced a divan of ghazals — "khabar-e-tahayyur-e-ishq sun" the most celebrated — where Sufi annihilation and the beloved's face are one subject. He died in Aurangabad, a practicing mystic to the end.
seekh gai gulshan mein tere quad sati
sarw par qumri ne ko ko bolnan
kaan mein hai tere moti aab daar
yaa kisi aashique ka aansoo bolnan
saamne us chehra-e gulfaam ke
har gul khoshbo koon khud ro bolnan
husn ke lashkar ke raawat hain do chashm
zulf w lab shab khoon ka quaboo bolnan
ab charaagh aql gul karni saraajaؔ
soz dil sin ek yaaho bolnan
seena saafi ki hai jise aeenak
us koon deedaar yaar hai be shak
safha-e dil koon daagh ki kar mehar
ishq ke shaah ne diya dastak
rahzan aql sin nahi waswaas
hoon hamaaeet mein ishq ki jab tak

na jale hargiz aag mein abrak
ghair ka naqsh ghair naqsh nigaar
safha-e dil sati kya hoon hak
shor hai bas ki tujh malaahat ka
dil hamaara hua hai kaan namak
gar jala chaahta hai misl saraajaؔ
ai dil us shola ro ki dekh jhalak
gham ki jab sozish sin mahram howe ga
chashma-e khursheed shabnam howe ga
yaad laawe ga kabhi toh mujh koon yaar
shama ban parwaana par kam howe ga
aashique w maashooque mein saalas hai ishq
salah ka paighaam baaham howe ga
kufr w iman do nadi hain ishq kin
aakhirash dono ka sangam howe ga
sarw quad ke ban abas hai sair baagh
baar gham sin sarw bhi kham howe ga
gar kare ahwaal shabnam par nazar
ratbaۂ khursheed kya kam howe ga
kabaۂ koo sanam mein ai saraajaؔ
ashk mera aab zamzam howe ga
jaanan pe ji nisaar hua kya baja hua
us raah mein ghubaar hua kya baja hua
