Born in Gwalior into a family of poets — Jaan Nisar Akhtar was his father, Majaz his uncle — Javed Akhtar first conquered Hindi cinema as a screenwriter before returning to the family craft. His collections "Tarkash" and "Lava" carry the progressive inheritance into a plain-spoken, questioning modern voice. He remains one of the subcontinent's most listened-to lyricists.
