Jaan Nisar Akhtar belonged to the Progressive Writers Movement's core and wrote a ghazal of quiet intimacy amid its loud decades. He compiled "Hindustan Hamara", a landmark anthology of secular Indian verse, and wrote film lyrics of lasting delicacy. Husband of the writer Safia Akhtar and father of Javed Akhtar, he anchors one of Urdu's great literary families.
