Altaf Hussain Hali of Panipat studied at Ghalib's feet and then broke with ornamental convention: his "Musaddas-e-Hali" (1879), on the rise and fall of Muslim civilization, made poetry an instrument of reform. His "Muqaddama-e-Sher-o-Shairi" is the founding text of modern Urdu criticism, and his biographies of Ghalib and Sir Syed remain standard reading.
